When Should You Start Christmas Shopping? Your 2026 Gift-Buying Timeline

There are two kinds of Christmas shoppers: the ones quietly building a list in a notes app since August, and the ones who discover it's the 20th of December with a sudden, very specific kind of dread. Most of us have been both, in different years.

The honest answer to "when should I start" is simple: earlier than you think, and earlier than feels necessary - because the benefit isn't really about beating the rush. It's about giving yourself room to choose something thoughtful instead of something available.

What the data actually says

According to YouGov's 2025 survey on UK Christmas shopping habits, two thirds (67%) of people buying presents say they'd typically begun shopping by the end of November, with 10% starting in October and 14% earlier still. On the other end, 42% said they were still buying after the 15th of December — including 9% who finish on the 22nd or 23rd, and 6% who leave it right up to Christmas Eve itself.

In other words: most people are already shopping well before December arrives - it's the last third, buying in the final fortnight, who tend to feel the most stretched for time, choice and stock availability.

Why earlier tends to mean more thoughtful

It's not really about avoiding queues. Shopping earlier changes the kind of decision you're able to make. In November, you're choosing based on who someone is. In the last week of December, you're often choosing based on what's still in stock, what can arrive in time, or what's left on the shelf - three very different starting points, and only one of them leads to a gift that actually lands.

A simple month-by-month timeline

  • August–September: Start a loose list. Who's on it, and - more usefully - what are they actually into right now?

  • October: Browse properly. This is the calmest month to shop in all year, with full stock and no pressure.

  • November: Order anything personalised, made-to-order, or likely to sell out - these need the most lead time.

  • Early December: Handle the remaining list at a comfortable pace, well ahead of postal cut-offs.

  • Mid–late December: Stocking fillers, last-minute additions, and anything you can collect in person.

Why we're launching in October

It's exactly why our own collection goes live on 1st October - to give you the full run-up to Christmas to shop without the scramble, back when "what should I get them" can still be a fun question to sit with rather than a last-minute panic. Ten interest-led gift boxes, each one built around who someone actually is.

Take a look when we go live, or follow along before then to see the collection as it comes together.
